Blouse styles

  • An ivory silk blouse laid flat, with a large bow tied at the neck, short gathered sleeves and a button front.

    Bow neck

Crepe de chine and satin tie into a bow that falls in soft loops at the neck. We can make the bow detachable, on a button loop at the collar, for customers who want to wear the same blouse open at the neck.

  • A cream polka-dot blouse with full bishop sleeves gathered into deep buttoned cuffs.

    Bishop sleeves

Bishop sleeves are cut much wider at the wrist than a straight sleeve and gathered into a deep cuff.

  • A white wrap blouse with a lace-edged V-neck and a tie at the side of the waist.

    Wrap

Because the wearer sets the overlap when she ties it, a wrap blouse fits a wider range of bust sizes than a buttoned one.

  • A black satin cowl-neck blouse with gold hardware at one shoulder and a loose fold across the chest.

    Cowl neck

Cowl folds drape best in satin or crepe cut diagonally across the cloth. The diagonal layout uses more fabric per blouse than a straight one.

  • A white and yellow striped blouse with a flat rounded collar, neck ties and short gathered sleeves.

    Peter Pan collar

Peter Pan collars get a light interfacing that holds their rounded edges flat on the shoulders.

  • A peach printed peasant blouse with a gathered neckline and full raglan sleeves, tucked into jeans.

    Peasant

Peasant blouses gather onto elastic or a drawstring at the neck. With an adjustable neck, they can be sold in two sizes, S/M and L/XL, instead of five.

  • An ivory blouse with short rounded puff sleeves, a gathered front and a curved hem.

    Puff sleeves

Puff sleeves keep their rounded shape in crisp cotton poplin or taffeta. In chiffon they need a strip of tulle sewn inside the sleeve head to stand up.

  • A cream one-shoulder blouse with a diagonal neckline edged in two soft ruffles.

    Ruffles

Ruffle strips are cut 1.5 to 2.5 times as long as the edge they trim. On a one-shoulder neckline we sew a stay tape under the ruffle seam, where the diagonal edge would otherwise stretch.

  • An orange sleeveless woven shell with a round neckline and a wide box pleat at center front.

    Shell

Sleeveless shells with a round neck are the blouses we price lowest. Most go on over the head and close with a button loop at the back.

  • A button-down shirt with a placket front.

    Button-front shirt

Office uniform blouses are commonly 65% polyester and 35% cotton poplin of 105–115 gsm. US customs charges that blend at the polyester rate.

Fabric choices

Custom blouse fabric comes from Guangzhou's Zhongda fabric market and from China Textile City in Keqiao, Shaoxing. If you don't know what your fabric is called, we can match it from a photo and make your first sample in the same cloth as the order.

Sheer purple chiffon in loose folds.

Chiffon

Chiffon is the sheerest fabric we sew blouses in, at 30–70 gsm in polyester. Georgette of 60–90 gsm shows less of what's underneath than chiffon, though in white or pale colors a bra is visible under either one.

Satin

We use polyester charmeuse of 80–100 gsm for most satin blouses, at $1–3 a meter from Chinese mills. Acetate satin, at $2–11 a meter, drapes more softly than polyester. Water leaves permanent marks on it. It goes only into dry-clean-only blouses.

Silk

Silk blouses are usually crepe de chine of 12–16 momme. One momme equals 4.3 gsm. Plain crepe de chine is $13–20 a meter in the 140 cm width. The 114 cm width is cheaper. Silk-viscose crepes with 30% silk or more cost $8–14 a meter. US duty on blouses made from them is lower than on pure silk.

Soft-finished Tencel twill in loose folds.

Rayon

Printed rayon challis is the everyday fabric for blouses meant to hang softly. Untreated rayon can shrink 5% or more in its first wash. Our rayon blouses carry a hand-wash-cold care label. For shirts that will be machine-washed at 30°C, Tencel twill of 150 gsm is the safer pick.

A white cotton blouse with an elasticated neckline below both shoulders and three-quarter sleeves.

Cotton

Cotton shirts are mostly 120–160 gsm poplin. Off-shoulder and peasant necklines sit more neatly in cotton lawn under 80 gsm than in heavier shirting poplin. Voile is sheerer than lawn. Pale voile blouses usually need a lining.

Linen

Pure linen sells for $4–11 a meter in China, cotton-linen blends for $2–5. Blends with 36% flax or more are taxed at a lower US rate than plain cotton. Unwashed linen can shrink by a tenth in the first wash. We recommend pre-washed linen for blouses.

Prints

Market stalls in Guangzhou and Keqiao sell printed chiffon and rayon by the meter, in designs that any other brand can buy from the same stall. For a print only your brand sells, we use digital printers whose minimum on polyester chiffon is 1 m per design. A 50-blouse order needs less cloth than the 100 m minimum that some print shops set, but ours run only the length it uses. You check the colors on a test strip printed on the actual fabric before the full length goes through.

Eyelet

Chinese mills sell embroidered cotton eyelet for $2–6 a meter and will stitch your own design once an order reaches 500 m or more. Smaller orders use eyelet already on the market stalls. When the eyelet has a scalloped border, we cut the blouse so the scallops form its hem and sleeve edges.

Lace

Wholesale allover lace runs from $2.50 to $6 per meter. Narrow lace trim is sold by the yard, at $0.05–0.50. Lace on mid-priced blouses is usually trim at the collar or cuffs.

Finishing details

We sew chiffon and georgette blouses with French seams instead of overlocked ones. Through a sheer fabric, an overlocked edge looks like a dark line beside the seam. Hems on those blouses are rolled to 2–3 mm wide by machine.

Collars and cuffs on sheer shirts are interfaced with silk organza or a second layer of the shirt fabric.

Customers who won't wear a camisole can still buy chiffon if the front and back are lined and only the sleeves stay sheer.

Sizing

We list eight measurements per size on the spec sheet and check finished blouses against them.

Button-front shirts get a button at the bust line, where a shirt without one gapes open as soon as the wearer moves her arms.

If your sizes run to 4XL or beyond, we first sew a size set of two blouses in the smallest and largest sizes.

Custom (Made to Order)

Our Custom blouses cost $9.50–17.50 at 50–99 pieces a color, and the price comes down to $6.00–11.00 by the time you order 300–500. Prices for 100–299 fall in between. Satin and sheer blouses are priced at the top of those ranges. We quote pure linen and silk separately.

The one-time $100–180 fee for a new style covers its pattern and its first three samples. A revised sample puts the schedule back 8–13 days, whether the fee covers it or you pay $30–80 for a fourth or later round. We count a size set as one sample round.

We ask for 30% up front and the balance once you've approved the inspection photos of your finished blouses.

We need 7–12 days from your deposit to make the first sample. Express brings it to you in another 3–6. We sew the order in 15–20 days from your sign-off on the sample. The finished blouses then travel 3–6 days by express, or 6–10 by air when the shipment weighs 45 kg or more. If the sample is approved as it is, a 50-piece order reaches you 28–44 days after the deposit. Custom-dyed colors add 5–7 days, and fabric printed with your artwork needs 10–30 more. Reorders of an approved style take 21–30 days without sampling.

Since collars and cuffs take up almost half the sewing time of a long-sleeved shirt, a bound neckline and elastic wrists save most of that cost.

Fabric-covered buttons cost under $0.15 a piece, but most button makers sell them in lots of 1,000 or more. You can skip that minimum on a first order by choosing a resin or shell button in a matching color from a button shop's stock.

Machine embroidery on a blouse takes 5–10 extra days. We digitize your design in the first 1–3 of them, at $10–75.

Ready-made (Stock Match)

Styles sold Ready-made are blouses a Chinese factory already sews and stocks. You can't change their fabric or pattern. Your label is sewn in at $0.35 a blouse.

Fifty pieces of one style can be split among the colors and sizes in the factory's stock. Boutiques use that split to test a new style in several colors at once. When you send photos, our sourcing team replies with the closest styles it can find in factory stock and the factory prices for them.

The sourcing fee is 12% of factory bills under $5,000, 9% from $5,000 to $19,999, 7% from $20,000 to $49,999 and 5% at $50,000 and up.

Ready-made orders are paid in full. The blouses take 11–18 days to reach a US address after payment. If you want to check the fabric and stitching in person before ordering, we can send one blouse by express for $15–60 in courier fees. We charge the blouse's factory price up front and deduct it from your order.

Rayon and Tencel count as man-made fibers at US customs. Other blends are classed by their heaviest fiber.

The US rates include the 20 percentage points of Section 301 tariffs on goods from China. Duty appears on your invoice at cost.

The UK and the EU charge a flat 12% on blouses from China, while Canada's rate depends on the fabric: 16% for silk, 17% for cotton or linen and 18% for polyester or rayon. Australia's rate is 5%, or nothing for Chinese-made blouses imported with a certificate of origin under the China-Australia free trade agreement.

Launch Kit images

From the inspection photos of each blouse style you order, we build a free Launch Kit: five product shots on white and a 10-second phone video. The images are ready to list while the blouses are still in transit from China.

A sixth picture shows the blouse on an AI model whose build and skin tone you choose. Further model pictures are $9 apiece and take 3 business days.

Blouse quotes

We can quote from a photo of the blouse and, if you know it, the fabric name. Within 24 hours we reply with a Custom price. When factories already sew something close, we add their Ready-made prices.
