Chunky knits

If you want a fisherman sweater or a chunky cable crewneck, the factory sets it up on a 3-, 5- or 7-gauge machine. Three-gauge makes the thickest knit of the three, close to a hand-knit look.

Mohair adds a fuzzy halo to the surface. Acrylic keeps a chunky sweater cheap and easy to wash, but US duty on an all-acrylic sweater is 32%. Blend in at least 23% wool by weight and the rate drops to 17%, before the additional China tariffs.

Because couriers bill by the kilo, a chunky order costs more to ship: a men's 5-gauge sweater in size M weighs 600–750 g, against 200–280 g at 14 gauge.

Fine-gauge sweaters

At 12 or 14 gauge, a sweater lies flat enough to wear under a blazer. Merino is the usual yarn here and feels soft on bare skin.

Cashmere yarn costs several times as much per kilo. We price cashmere sweaters style by style. For warm-weather ranges, we make the same styles in cotton.

Colorwork

Your holiday sweaters can have Fair Isle bands, reindeer or your own motif knitted straight in. A computerized flat knitting machine switches between colored yarns stitch by stitch to build the pattern.

Every stitch in a knitted logo is one needle wide: 2.1 mm at 12 gauge, 5.1 mm at 5 gauge. If your logo has small lettering, keep it on a fine-gauge style.

You can choose from the factory's stock yarn shades on any order. A Pantone color dyed to order is another matter. Spinners usually want an order of 100–200 kg for a custom shade, the yarn for a few hundred sweaters. The dyeing adds 5–15 days.

A 14-gauge sweater takes longer to knit than a 7-gauge one and lands higher in each price range.
